July 12 | Closing this week: +2 at Sloan Fine Art Gallery
Sloan Fine Art Gallery has invited some of its past solo and group artists to each display their work with 2 artists/friends of their choice with the only stipulation that they themselves are excited about the work shown. The end result is the funnest group show of the summer of small bright pieces at affordable prices.
+2 closes Saturday, July 18th at Sloan Fine Art located on 128 Rivington St.
May 10 | Running through mid-August at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the new Francis Bacon exhibit looks at 130 works from across the artist's career.
Disturbing and dark, as you would expect a retrospective of Bacon's work to be, a surprising chunk of it focuses on Bacon's more autobiographical work -- "portraits" of his friends and lovers, including George Dyer, who appears repeatedly, as well as many photographs from which Bacon based his paintings. This autobiographical focus is fascinating for those interested in the artist's personal life, or in how any artist's biography intersects with his work, but for those more enthralled by Bacon's debilitatingly frightful view of the world, the exhibit is a little lacking. There are a few interesting pieces later in the series, but on the whole, the progression of images tells you more about Bacon himself than his work.
The exhibit, Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective, is on display from May 20, 2009 to August 16, 2009 in the Special Exhibition Galleries on the 2nd floor of the Met.
