Depression Kills. Depression paralyzes. Depression Sleeps. Depression is solitary. Depression is Hyper and Aggressive. The Art of Depression, is the name of my collection of acrylic on wood board paintings. Painting is my way of exorcizing certain thoughts, moods and feelings out of my body. I mostly use bright primary colors in my paintings because they have the characteristic elements to energize, uplift and promote a positive mood. Most of my painting are inhabited by characters that I refer to as ‘The Infected People’. Infected not by a disease but by the mood of Depression. These characters are painted with square spots that covers the infected characters body and these spots can be best described as wild electrons within an atom. When the characters’ mood is calm and collected, these electrons slowly fade away and completely disappears . In most of my work, the “infected” character is almost always in charge, although in some pieces he is clearly the victim. |

All of my paintings describe a specific mood or a reoccurring mood that I experience every now and then. Those moods can’t be precisely described with words, hence the need for me to express them thru my work. The scenes that are depicted in my paintings are split second flash thoughts that comes to mind when I’m in a certain mood. The specific colors that I use also help calibrate the level of energy and mood in each character and sometimes certain colors are used to identify a specific character by individuality, role or by profession. My process for creating a painting starts with translating my feelings into a scene that can be visualized . Then I’ll work on a sketch for as long as it is necessary in order to get the basic scene that can best describe that mood. A work is not considered complete until I feel like I’ve completely exorcized and transfered that specific mood from my body onto the medium that I am painting on. Everyday life observations and personal involvements are the two of the main influences in my paintings. |
